About

A steady presence for unsteady seasons.

I'm James — a licensed clinical social worker practicing in New York and New Jersey. This is a little about who you'd be sitting with.

My name is James Macaulay McManus. I'm a gay trans man and a licensed clinical social worker in New York State (license number to come) and in New Jersey.

I started my social work career at NYC non-profits like Housing Works and the NYC Anti-Violence Project, and I've been in private practice for the last four years. I especially enjoy working with LGBTQIA+ adolescents and adults navigating identity, coming out, and transition — and I write gender-affirming surgery letters pro bono, in a single session, for folks in NY and NJ.

I trained in Gestalt therapy at Gestalt Associates for Psychotherapy. Gestalt is relational work in the here and now — attentive to mind and body together, and to what happens between us in the room. Credentials only tell you so much about what it is like to sit with someone, though, which is why the first conversation is free.

I see clients by telehealth across New York and New Jersey, with very limited in-person availability in Flatiron.

If it feels like we might be a fit, you are welcome to reach out. A short note is enough.
